HONOURED IN DEATH: President William Ruto has conferred Kenya’s highest civilian honour — the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H) — on the late Raila Odinga in recognition of his lifelong service, sacrifice, and contribution to national unity and democracy.
Kitui, Kenya, Oct’ 20, 2025 — President William Ruto on Monday dedicated this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, honouring him posthumously with Kenya’s highest civilian award, the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.), First Class.
Speaking at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County, President Ruto described Raila as a statesman whose immense contribution and sacrifice shaped Kenya’s democratic and developmental journey.
“We dedicate this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in recognition of his immense contribution and sacrifice in shaping the transformation of our nation,” Ruto said.
“In his honour, we confer upon him Kenya’s highest civilian award, the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.), First Class. This distinction secures Mr Odinga’s place among the foremost of our national heroes, a legacy that will inspire generations,” he added.
The President was joined by First Lady Rachel Ruto, his Senegalese counterpart Bassirou Diomaye Faye — who was the chief guest — and Mozambique Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levy, among other dignitaries.
President Ruto eulogised the former Opposition leader as a patriot who consistently put the nation’s interests above his own. He noted that Raila fought for peace, unity and democracy, often bridging political divides in moments of national tension.
“Mr Odinga always sought to unite Kenyans, whether through handshakes or dialogue, because he understood that divisive politics could make Kenya a failed state,” Ruto said.
Ruto pledged to advance causes that the late Odinga championed, including deepening democracy, enhancing food security, promoting industrialisation, and expanding energy and infrastructure development.
Raila Odinga, who passed away on October 15 in India, was widely remembered for his selfless service, his role in the struggle for multi-party democracy, and his efforts to reconcile political rivals in pursuit of national stability. His legacy, Ruto said, “will be emulated and lived on by generations to come.”
The President concluded his address by calling for unity and progress, urging Kenyans to emulate the spirit of patriotism and selflessness embodied by the late Raila Odinga.
