The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has swiftly moved to stabilise its leadership structure following the death of its long-time leader, Raila Odinga. In a decisive Thursday morning National Executive Committee (NEC) session, Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga was unanimously appointed as the party’s acting leader, signaling the beginning of a new chapter for the opposition outfit.
Raila Odinga, who had steered ODM for decades and played a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape, passed away on Wednesday in Kochi, India, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.
According to an official party statement, Dr. Oginga will hold the position temporarily as the NEC prepares to convene again to determine ODM’s long-term leadership direction. “The National Executive Committee has unanimously endorsed Dr. Oburu Oginga as the acting party leader. This appointment takes immediate effect,” the statement read.
In a show of national solidarity, President William Ruto declared a seven-day period of mourning, directing that the Kenyan flag be flown at half-mast to honour the former Prime Minister’s legacy. The government also confirmed that Odinga will be accorded a full state funeral, underscoring his significant contributions to the country’s democratic journey.
The developments mark the beginning of both a period of reflection and political recalibration within ODM and the nation at large.
