Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi has been deported by Tanzanian Authorities after he was released last night.

The renowned activist was deported by road through the Lungalunga-Tanzania border and abandoned in Ukunda, Kwale county in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

According to his family, Mwangi has been taken to hospital for medical check-up.

He was released by Tanzanian Authorities after being detained for several days without charge, according to the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi.

Activist Boniface Mwangi’s release follows mounting public pressure and diplomatic engagement, with Kenyan citizens threatening to protests outside the Tanzanian High Commission in Nairobi, early Thursday.

Already Human rights defenders have been protesting outside Tanzania’s Consulate for two consecutive days warning that no activities will be going on at the Consulate until their demands that Tanzania Authorities release Boniface Mwangi and Uganda lawyer Agatha Atuihire.

The activist’s detention sparked widespread outrage, which depicted an arbitrary move that violated both bilateral and international norms.

Activist Boniface Mwangi’s release came barely a day after Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs issued a strongly worded protest letter to Dodoma, demanding immediate consular access or release.

The letter, dated May 21, 2025 cited obligations under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations expressing concern over the denial of access to Mwangi and the lack of information about his well-being.

“The Ministry is also concerned about his health, overall well-being, and the absence of information regarding his detention,” further read the protest.

Activists in Kenya have vowed to file a suit against Tanzanian Authorities for going against the East African Community unity and spirit.
