Kenyans are urged to safeguard the judiciary against the wrath of political class.

Kenyans are further being challenged to protect the Constitution as the Supreme law in the country, and battle any attempts to mutilate the Supreme document.

Speaking in Mombasa on Friday, human rights defenders led by Kenya Community Support Centre (KECOSCE) Executive Director Phyllis Muema termed the fight against judiciary as total shame, asking President William Ruto to cease the threats against the independent arm of government.

She stated that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has the mandate to root out any corrupt public officer and lawfully punish them.

Dangerous trend

According to Muema, the massive fight President Ruto launched against the judiciary is dangerous and will hinder proper expedition of the judiciary’s mandate to Kenyans.

Muema is now calling on Kenyans to unite and safeguard the judiciary against Kenya Kwanza political missiles that will affect Kenyans’ efforts of seeking justice.

“The true colours we are seeing today from our President is an assault to already suffering Kenyans, the President should stop denting the efforts and image of the judiciary and recognize it as a critical and independent  arm of the government,” noted Muema.

The activist noted that the judiciary is only doing what is right for Kenyans and has been expediting its mandate by adhering to the Constitution and serving Kenyans without fear, favour or any form of discrimination.

“We will back the efforts from our colleagues who have acted as litigants to the Kenya Kwanza oppressive Financial law 2023, who doesn’t see or know that Kenyans are suffering from the wrath of overtaxation from the Ruto’s regime?” posed the activist.

The KECOSCE Executive Director urged activists across the country not to relent in accelerating for a just justice system in the country and ensure it remains an independent arm of the government.

Protest

Muema’s sentiments come amid protests from lawyers cross the country who are accusing President Ruto and his entire Kenya Kwanza government for tearing the judiciary apart.

The lawyers who recently engaged in nationwide protests said the government should stop politicizing judicial work and indepence.

Led by Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Eric Theuri, the ‘learned friends’ challenged President Ruto to present his graft allegations against the judiciary to EACC for investigations and possible prosecution of suspects.

Similar sentiments were earlier issued by Chief Justice Martha Koome who asked all those accusing the judiciary of graft to present tangible evidence that will lead to their expunge from the judicial service.

In his recent remarks, President William Ruto said the courts will not stop him from implementing his development projects including that of affordable housing where Kenyans are deducted 1.5 percent of their salaries and their employers contributing similar amount to fund the program.
