Nairobi, Kenya, October 17, 2025- The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has paid glowing tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a towering figure in Kenya’s democratic and constitutional journey.
In a statement signed by LSK President Faith Odhiambo, the society said Raila’s life was inseparable from the struggle for constitutionalism, human rights, and the rule of law in Kenya.
“Raila chose to live for Kenya in ways nobody else could. His relentless advocacy shaped the legal and political landscape we now enjoy,” the statement read in part.
LSK hailed Raila’s contribution to the repeal of Section 2A of the former Constitution, which paved the way for multi-party democracy, and his central role in shaping the 2010 Constitution of Kenya, describing it as the “crowning achievement of modern Kenyan jurisprudence.”
The society said Raila’s vision for devolution and his commitment to justice and equality helped design a governance system that dispersed power and brought services closer to the people.
“His sacrifices were a catalyst for the recognition of human rights and socio-economic rights as fundamental and enforceable entitlements under our Constitution,” LSK stated.
The lawyers’ body also praised Raila’s faith in the judiciary, noting that his willingness to submit political disputes to the courts strengthened Kenya’s judicial independence and respect for the rule of law.
“He did not merely live by the rule of law — he fought for it, personified it, and gave all he could so that it may become part of the Kenyan reality,” Faith Odhiambo said.
LSK described Raila as “a gallant warrior in the fight for reform, democracy, and justice,” saying his enduring legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
“The human library of Kenya’s history has been burnt to the ground, but his enduring legacy will keep Kenya on the path of hope that a better tomorrow awaits,” the statement concluded.
Raila Odinga, Kenya’s second Prime Minister and a key architect of the 2010 Constitution, will be laid to rest in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
