A total of 11 Public health students from the Kenyatta University (KU) perished in a grisly road accident at Maungu area along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
The students were heading to Mombasa for an official education tour before their bus was involved in a head on collision with a trailer at Maungu amid heavy downfall in the area.
21 other students sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving urgent treatment at the Moi Teaching and refferal hospital in Voi, Taita Taveta county.
Voi Police Commander Ibrahim Daffala said 42 other students who sustained slight injuries were taken to various hospitals around inclusing the Moi Teaching and Referral hospital in Voi, Taita Taveta county.
“However, four of the students could not be accounted for. We are working closely with the University management to unearth their whereabouts. Most likely they have been rushed to nearby hospitals by well-wishers,” revealed the police boss.
The truck driver and his assistant were slightly injured.
Authorities are yet to reveal the cause of the Monday evening road carnage.
The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue, in Voi, Taita Taveta county.
The Univeristy management is yet to issue a detailed statement about the Monday evening road carnage that left 11 students dead, 21 seriously injured and 42 others with slight injuries. Four of the students cannot be accounted for.
According to Daffala, police are investigating to unearth the cause of the accident.
