The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has condemned what it termed as unwarranted and unjustified media attacks on Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo for accepting a presidential appointment.

Ms. Odhiambo was recently named to the Presidential Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Protests and Riots, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from sections of the media and the society itself.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the MCK described the criticism as “uncalled for and in bad faith,” saying it undermines the media’s own principles of fairness and accountability.

“It is profoundly perplexing and hypocritical that some sections of the media have chosen to vilify Ms. Odhiambo for accepting a role to serve the public,” the council said.

The MCK noted that rejecting such appointments would limit the LSK to “pure criticism” without contributing to governance from within. The council further argued that calls for Odhiambo to resign were illogical and counterproductive.

The statement praised Kenyan journalists for their past sacrifices in pursuit of justice and truth but urged them to maintain fairness and restraint in reporting on the issue.

“Condemning Ms. Odhiambo for an anticipated failure before she has even begun her work is not only premature but also cynical, counterproductive and borders on sadism,” the MCK said.

The council called on the media to avoid vilifying individuals who take up government roles in good faith, urging instead for unity in supporting national healing, accountability, and justice.
