Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has been charged with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion and transportation to engage with prostitution, according to his unsealed accusations.

The allegations against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs have been fast and frequent over the last few years. The music mogul has faced several lawsuits alleging sexual assault. In March, 2024, federal investigators raided Diddy’s Miami and Los Angeles homes.

In the wake of these revelations, many people speculated it was only a matter of time until criminal charges were brought against Puff Daddy (Sean Combs). Combs faces federal charges for racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. A judge denied him bail and he is currently in custody.

The debauched parties Combs threw have captured a lot of headlines. Prosecutors have alleged Combs organised what he called “Freak-Offs,” which could last for days, where he flew in male prostitutes to engage in orchestrated sex acts with women he lured into his orbit through force and guile. He is also accused of using narcotics to manipulate women into performing sex acts.

But to call the underlying behavior in the indictment scandalous understates the violent nature of the charges. Prosecutors allege that Combs repeatedly physically, emotionally and sexually abused women and others. He would assault, or threaten to assault, witnesses to this abuse. The summons also alleges Combs and his criminal enterprise engaged in arson, kidnapping, bribery, and obstruction of justice. That’s just for the racketeering charges.

He is also accused of sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. The feds claim that Combs used force, threats of force, and coercion to get both men and women to engage in commercial sex acts.

Combs was able to avoid legal consequences for many years despite repeated allegations of violence and abuse. That began to change when Cassie Ventura, his former girlfriend, filed a lawsuit against Diddy on November 16, 2023. The lawsuit alleged the rapper trafficked her, raped her, and assaulted her repeatedly over ten years. She met Diddy when she was 19 and he was 37. Ultimately, the case was settled for an undisclosed amount. But other allegations have arisen since. In addition to his criminal charges, Combs is facing multiple civil lawsuits.

Combs was denied bail in part because of an alleged history of witness intimidation. He will remain incarcerated until his trial. Should he be convicted on any of these charges, he could face significant time in prison — potentially decades.

While Sean Combs became incredibly wealthy through a string of lifestyle brands, from vodka to a clothing line, he will likely continue to face civil lawsuits that could personally cost him millions. In addition, his various brands are likely to suffer, and his business, Combs’ Enterprises, was named in the indictment as facilitating his criminal acts.

While Combs has legal rights as a criminal defendant, racketeering charges only come after a significant investigation by federal authorities. The law was designed to go after the head of criminal organisations, and federal authorities allege Combs Enterprises was and is a criminal organisation. These are serious charges that are difficult to fight. For the foreseeable future, Combs will have to forego his well-known fashion sense for a prison uniform.

But a civil suit alleging sexual and physical violence from ex-partner Casandra Ventura, known professionally as Cassie, would be the start of his downfall.

Cassie’s lawsuit was the first of multiple similar civil cases levelled against Combs, the most recent filed on September 25.

In less than 12 months, Combs has gone from a rap mogul/business entrepreneur/actor to being under lock and key in one of New York City’s most notorious prisons facing charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.

Sean “Diddy” Combs — who has gone by the names Puff Daddy, P Diddy and Love — is an American rapper, actor and entrepreneur who founded an entertainment empire, including Bad Boy Records, the clothing label Sean John and Revolt TV, which has since announced a new ownership structure. Combs was also the face of alcohol brand Cîroc Vodka, in a deal that ended acrimoniously.

Born in Harlem in New York City, Combs was just three years old when his father Melvin Combs was murdered after being mistaken for an informant during a drug deal gone wrong.

Combs was nicknamed Puffy in his youth due to his habit of huffing and puffing whenever he was angry. (He changed his middle name from John to Love in 2021.)

Combs dropped out of Howard University in 1990 to pursue an internship at Uptown Records.

It would be a rapid rise at Uptown; before long, he was promoted to an A&R executive and later, vice-president.

In a press conference, Damian Williams, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, said the charges dated from 2008 to the present.

“The indictment alleges that … Combs abused, threatened and coerced victims to fulfil his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct,” Williams said.

Racketeering essentially means engaging in a criminal enterprise.

If convicted of the sex-trafficking charges, Combs would face a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison. The racketeering conspiracy charge could see him face a life sentence.
