Coast based Radio King bags Global recognition

He has been singled out as an entertainer, radio presenter who crafted his only ways to recruit the youthful audience, making them glued to his entertainment show fused with education and informative societal concerns.

Gates Mgenge, ‘Grandson’ remains a household name in the Coastal radio industry.

He currently works for Pwani FM, a regional radio station, wholly owned by the state broadcaster, KBC.

On May 3, 2025 at the Emara Ole Sereni Hotel in the Kenya’s Capital, Nairobi, the Radio personality could not quickly express the mixed feeling after he was named the Best Male Presenter at the Africa Golden Awards 2025.

The prestigious recognition highlights his exceptional talent and dedication in the radio broadcasting industry. Gates Mgenge’s engaging presence and commitment to quality programming content and consistency made him standout from other Radio presenters in the country and the African continent.

Mgenge’s Global achievement underscores the growing influence of coastal media personalities on the continental stage.

The battle comprised of big names among them Lily Ommy (Tanzania), Millard Ayo (Tanzania), Kenya’s Radio -47 Breakfast show host, Alex Mwakideu, Radio Citizen presenter, Mzazi Willy M. Tuva, among others.

Gates Mgenge started his career almost two decades ago at Pwani FM.

He later joined Pilipili FM which was later rebranded to Msenangu FM, owned by Mediamax Limited.

The calm, composed radio presenter would later bounce back to Pwani FM, now hosting the station’s drive show from 4pm.

Mgenge has positioned himself in the entertainment sector, always ensuring his audience gets what they want.

His broadcasting tactics have been pegged on understanding his audience who are spread across the Coast region and beyond, knowing the ever changing media dynamics and digital development, engaging his vast audience and other players in the entertainment industry, always in communication with the artists and music producers and valuing feedback from audience and other quarters related to his work.

His win has been recognised by Pwani FM Station Manager, Maximiller Walukhu who termed the global recognition as well deserved, however, noting that it comes as a challenge bestowed on the victor to even do more in his work to ensure his audience are entertained, informed and at the same time consistently educated.
