Britam General Insurance has partnered with Hotpoint Appliances and MIC Global Risks to introduce an all-risks insurance cover for select household appliances purchased at Hotpoint outlets and on its online store.

The cover, which is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase, is automatically activated at no additional cost to customers when they buy eligible appliances. Products covered under the scheme include refrigerators, freezers, televisions, selected audio systems, laundry machines, dishwashers, cookers — excluding table-top models — and room air conditioners.

Customers will be insured against accidental damage, power surges, fire and water damage, transit loss, theft, burglary, and political violence and terrorism. The partnership also provides a repair-or-replace guarantee to ensure damaged items are quickly restored or replaced. Buyers will receive a digital insurance certificate at checkout, and claims will be processed through Britam’s digital claims portal.

The launch comes amid rising demand for household electronics, supported by growing urbanization, increased uptake of mortgages and an expanding middle class. The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) 2025 Economic Outlook projects the domestic household appliances and consumer electronics market will grow by 11.4% in 2025, buoyed by higher disposable incomes and improving consumer confidence.

Britam General Insurance CEO and Principal Officer James Mbithi said the partnership aligns with the company’s 2025 strategy to boost insurance penetration through digital and lifestyle-focused products. He noted that embedding insurance in the purchase process makes protection more accessible and relevant to consumers.

Hotpoint Appliances CEO Ravi Kanani said the initiative enhances customer value by offering added protection beyond the sale of appliances, while MIC Global Risks Chief Operations Officer and Principal Officer Puneet Chawla said the collaboration delivers innovative insurance solutions tailored to evolving household needs.

According to the 2025 Consumer Electronics and Household Report by Research ICT Africa, more than 40 per cent of urban Kenyan households currently own at least one major appliance, a figure expected to rise to over 55 per cent by 2027, increasing demand for affordable protection solutions.

Under the partnership, Hotpoint will provide customer support and product verification through its service network, MIC Global Risks will support delivery of the insurance product, and Britam will underwrite and manage claims.
