Security has been intensified across Kenya’s coastal region as a multi-agency team rolls out operations to ensure public safety during the Easter holiday.

Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno assured both local and international tourists of a peaceful holiday season, citing coordinated efforts to combat crime and prevent road accidents.

“We’ve implemented an operation order with security teams strategically deployed throughout the region,” Nuno said during a press briefing in Mombasa. “Our beaches remain safe, and we invite everyone to enjoy their holidays responsibly.”

The police chief attributed the majority of road accidents to drunk driving, fatigue, and driver negligence. He urged travellers to use qualified and responsible drivers, warning that authorities would take firm action against violators.

Nuno also sounded the alarm over the reemergence of criminal gangs in parts of Mombasa and Kwale counties. He announced a crackdown and issued a warning to parents.

“Minors found with weapons like machetes and clubs will lead to their parents being charged with negligence,” he said. “For those over 18, parents could face charges for harbouring criminals. We expect parents to take full responsibility.”

He further advised beach visitors to vacate public beach areas by 6:00 p.m. as part of the broader safety initiative.

Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Noor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining order, highlighting the collaboration between police, the National Government Administrative Officers, and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

“We’re prepared for any eventuality during the Easter period,” Noor said.

NTSA Chairman Khatib Mwashetani emphasised a focus on major travel routes, including the Mombasa-Nairobi, Mombasa-Kilifi, Mombasa-Lamu, and Mombasa-Lungalunga highways.

Mwashetani urged drivers to comply with all road safety regulations, including having functional speed governors, and warned that a crackdown is imminent.

“Those who break traffic laws and endanger others on the road will be dealt with decisively,” he stated.
