Nairobi, Kenya – Sept 26, 2025- M-KOPA, Africa’s inclusive fintech company, has announced it has surpassed 3 million active customers across its markets, marking a significant milestone in its growth.
According to the firm’s 2025 Impact Report, nine out of ten active customers said M-KOPA had improved their quality of life, up from eight in ten last year. Since its founding in 2011, the company has served more than 7 million people and disbursed over $2 billion in credit, largely targeting micro-entrepreneurs in the informal sector who lack access to traditional banking.
“What matters most to us is how many people we’re actively serving every day, those who stay engaged with us over time. Our active customer number reached 3 million for the first time this year,” said Jesse Moore, Co-Founder and CEO of M-KOPA. “When we ask customers ‘does M-KOPA make your life better?’ nine out of ten say yes. That’s tangible and meaningful impact on millions of lives.”
The company operates in Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa, and employs more than 2,000 staff and 35,000 sales agents. Its products include smartphones, solar energy kits, electric motorbikes and health insurance, offered through flexible credit arrangements.
M-KOPA’s model has enabled 2.5 million first-time smartphone users since 2020, with 81 percent of women customers reporting they would not have been able to afford a device without the service. For over half of its users, the company provides their first access to formal financial services, while two-thirds have obtained health insurance for the first time through the platform.
The firm has also expanded into sustainable mobility and circular economy products, financing more than 4,000 electric motorbikes and preventing an estimated 46,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. In 2024, its local procurement spending reached $236 million across its markets.
Recognised by the Financial Times as one of Africa’s fastest-growing companies for four consecutive years, and by CNBC as one of the world’s top fintech firms in 2025, M-KOPA says it is on track to reach 10 million active customers by the end of the decade.
