Lead counsel Martha Karua remains the last hope in Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, treason case.

Karua, has remained firm in fighting for bail and release of the renowned Ugandan politician and opposition leader who is facing treason case.

The High court in Kampala, Uganda was in session on Wednesday, for the bail application of Kizza Besigye and Obed Lutale.

The ruling was adjourned to Friday, August 8, 2025, and is expected to be delivered on email.

Karua, the Lead counsel in the case says “justice must persist”.

Charges

Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye was charged with treason in a Ugandan court in February, 2025 just two days after the court failed to make its decision.

Veteran Ugandan opposition politician Kizza Besigye was charged with treason in a civilian court after his controversial case was transferred from a military tribunal.

Treason is a capital offence in Uganda and if found guilty the 68-year-old could be handed death sentence.

He was charged alongside Hajj Obeid Lutale two other suspects, but they did not enter a plea on the grounds that the charges against them could only be heard in a higher court.

Besigye, who has run for president against long-serving leader, Yoweri Museveni four times, has been in detention since he was dramatically abducted in Kenya in November and taken back to Uganda to face a military trial.

However, a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court last month said that trying civilians in military courts was unconstitutional and ordering all such cases to be transferred.

The move irritated President Museveni, who termed it “a wrong decision,”

Besigye began a hunger strike over his continued detention. It is alleged that Besigye was plotting to remove Museveni from power by force.
