Mombasa County has unveiled a packed calendar of events to mark this year’s Tourism Week, culminating in World Tourism Day celebrations on September 27.
Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, speaking at Uhuru Gardens, said the activities are designed to showcase Mombasa’s unique appeal as Kenya’s top coastal destination while boosting both domestic and international arrivals.
The week kicked off with refresher courses for tuk tuk drivers and tourism unit officials at Swahilipot Hub, conducted by Kenya Utalii College. On Thursday, a “meet and greet” will be held at Moi International Airport and the SGR terminus in partnership with the Kenya Tourism Board to welcome visitors flying in on Ethiopian Airlines, FlyDubai, and Kenya Airways.
“FlyDubai has already been cleared to increase its direct flights to Mombasa, which is good news for our destination,” said Governor Nassir.
On Friday, car drifters will take over key city spots including Nyali Bridge, Makupa, Mwembe Tayari, Digo Road, and the Ferry roundabout, ahead of a tree-planting drive and grand procession on Saturday. The procession, expected to draw over 3,000 participants, will start at the iconic tusks and end at Mama Ngina Waterfront, where the new Mombasa Tourism Unit will be unveiled.
Other highlights include the FishMish Fiesta featuring seafood vendors, cultural exhibitions, a storytelling festival, and a dinner at Fort Jesus. The week will close on Sunday with the second edition of the Mombasa Tuk Tuk Rally and a drift showcase at Mama Ngina Waterfront, where winners will walk away with cash prizes.
The Governor also announced the formation of a special tourism inspectorate unit within the county to guide and assist visitors, including cruise ship passengers, while boosting safety.
Nassir applauded corporate sponsors including and urged residents and visitors to join the festivities under the official hashtag #ExploreMombasa.
“Mombasa is unique in every sense from our cultural heritage to our beaches, from business tourism to historic attractions. We have what it takes to remain Kenya’s preferred destination,” he said.
