The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has intensified its crackdown on contraband goods with the arrest and arraignment of three suspects found in possession of uncustomed Brazilian sugar.
The suspects — Guni Ngalaa Ngui, Mwero Chindoro Choga, and Mchanda Mahupa Dalu — were arrested on July 28, 2025, in Lunga Lunga Township along the Jua Kali–Lunga Lunga Road in Kwale County.
They were found transporting 14 bags of brown sugar branded as Brazilian VHP, each weighing 50 kilograms, concealed in blue nylon sacks. The consignment was being ferried in a vehicle registered as KDS 836A.
According to KRA, the suspects failed to produce valid importation documents at the time of interception. The sugar, valued at KSh 94,738 in dutiable tax, and the vehicle were impounded.
The trio appeared before Principal Magistrate Leah Kabaria at the Msambweni Law Courts, where they were charged with being in possession of uncustomed goods, contrary to customs laws. Each was released on a Ksh. 20,000.
The case will be mentioned on August 19, 2025.
This latest seizure brings to 678 the total number of 50kg bags of contraband sugar intercepted at the Lunga Lunga and Taveta One Stop Border Posts.
KRA has also confiscated three containers of raw macadamia at the Port of Mombasa, underscoring its commitment to combating smuggling and protecting legitimate businesses.
KRA reiterated that it will continue enforcing compliance to safeguard the country’s revenue and curb the entry of illicit goods.
