Kenya’s revenue regulatory body Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has foiled a tax fraud scheme involving irregular clearance of rice containers at a Container Freight Station (CFS) in Mombasa, saving the government Ksh123 million.
According to KRA, the attempted fraud occurred between August 1 and August 23, 2025, when 161 containers of rice were irregularly cleared. The anomaly was detected through routine audit checks, leading to swift action by the Authority.
“KRA has since recovered the full amount of revenue that was at risk of loss,” the Authority said in a statement.
A comprehensive investigation has been launched, with KRA working jointly with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and other law enforcement agencies. The probe will seek to establish those responsible for the fraudulent clearance, including possible involvement of KRA staff.
The taxman reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on corruption, promising strict action against all those found culpable.
“The Authority assures the public that anyone found culpable, whether staff members or external parties, will face the full rigour of the law,” read the statement signed by the Commissioner of Customs and Border Control.
