The Homa Bay County Government has interdicted a senior officer accused of involvement in the abduction and assault of a journalist.

In a statement on Monday, County spokesperson Atieno Otieno confirmed that Beatrice Mercy Akugo, a Human Resources Officer in the Department of Roads, Transport, and Public Works, was interdicted effective immediately to allow investigations.

Akugo is facing allegations of abduction, physical assault, and intimidation of a journalist in Homa Bay. The journalist was reportedly abducted, held against his will, assaulted, and threatened.

“The interdiction is a standard procedural measure to allow for a thorough, impartial, and unimpeded investigation into these allegations. The County Government is fully cooperating with the National Police Service and other relevant investigative agencies to ensure a comprehensive probe is conducted,” the statement read in part.

The County Government condemned the incident, reiterating its zero-tolerance policy on abuse of office and violence targeting members of the press.

“Journalism is a cornerstone of our democracy, and the safety of journalists is non-negotiable. Any officer who misuses their position to perpetrate wrongdoing will face stern consequences,” Otieno stated.

The county assured the public of its commitment to the rule of law, promising that any individual found guilty of the offence will face full legal action alongside internal disciplinary measures.
