For years, Mwanahamisi Hamadi’s calm voice and graceful presence have filled Kenyan living rooms every evening. As a leading Swahili news anchor and editor on Citizen TV, she became a trusted storyteller — the kind who connects seamlessly with her audience through authenticity and empathy.

To some extent being referred to as Mwanamke Bomba (Super woman) by her vast fans in the country and beyond following her TV segment Mwanamke Bomba that focuses on the strength of a woman and women doing extraordinary in the society.

Today, that same empathy is guiding her beyond the studio lights and into the heart of her community. The celebrated broadcaster has embarked on a new mission — one grounded not in scripts or headlines, but in service and transformation.

Familiar Face, New Calling

Born and raised in Mombasa County, Hamadi’s journey reflects the story of perseverance, talent, and deep cultural pride. After studying at the University of Nairobi, she began her journalism career driven by a passion for communication and public engagement.

Her breakthrough came at Citizen TV, where she rose through the ranks to become one of the most respected Swahili news anchors in the country. Her eloquence, composure, and ability to tell stories that resonate with ordinary Kenyans made her a household name.

Through shows like Mwanamke Bomba, she spotlighted the power and resilience of women across Kenya — celebrating those who build, nurture, and lead quietly in their communities. Later, her programs Siha na Maumbile and Mapishi Time on Viusasa showcased her versatility and love for culture, health, and family life.

Yet behind the lights and applause, Hamadi felt an urge growing stronger — a desire to serve beyond the newsroom.

The nod

In 2024, she announced her intention to contest the Likoni Parliamentary seat in the 2027 general elections — a decision that took many by surprise but resonated deeply within her hometown.

“I have lived among my people all my life,” she says. “I know their struggles — from unemployment and insecurity to lack of opportunities. Joining politics is my way of being part of the solution.”

Her transition from broadcasting to politics, she insists, is not about fame but about service. “The media taught me to listen, to question, and to seek truth. Those are the same values I’m taking into leadership,” she adds.

Community-Centered Leadership

Since declaring her candidacy, Hamadi has immersed herself in grassroots work across Likoni. She has been holding forums with women, youth, and persons with disabilities — championing inclusivity and social empowerment.

One of her recent initiatives saw her distribute wheelchairs to persons with disabilities, a gesture that won admiration among residents.

“For me, leadership is about inclusion,” she explains. “It’s not about making promises from a podium. It’s about sitting with people, understanding their needs, and working together towards solutions.”

Her approach — which she calls “community-based leadership” — is anchored on consultation and collaboration. Residents propose and decide, while she and other stakeholders help translate ideas into tangible transformative change.

Political analysts say her growing popularity in Likoni could reshape the constituency’s political landscape, which has long been dominated by the incumbent MP Mishi Mboko, now serving her second term.

Resilience Against Challenges

Like many women entering politics, Hamadi’s path has not been without challenges. She has faced intimidation and online attacks, and recently, her home in Kiteje, Likoni, was broken into by unknown individuals — an incident currently under police investigation.

While supporters quickly linked the break-in to political tension, Hamadi chose composure over confrontation, one of her unique characters her friends, colleagues and the Likoni community cherish.

“Such incidents only strengthen my resolve,” she said afterward. “I am committed to my people, and nothing will distract me from that mission.”

Her calm response echoed the same steadiness that once defined her news delivery — composed, factual, and unwavering.

Beyond the Screen

Away from her professional life, Mwanahamisi is a proud mother and an entrepreneur. She runs Chully Foods and Spices, a venture inspired by her love for coastal cuisine and cultural heritage. Her life off-camera reflects the same authenticity she projects on-screen — rooted, purposeful, and quietly ambitious.

In 2025, her name appeared among those proposed for Mashujaa Day honours, recognising her contributions to media and community empowerment.

Colleagues describe her as principled and grounded. “She’s the kind of journalist who treats every story as a service,” one of her newsroom peers, Mashirima Kapombe says. “It’s only natural she’s now extending that service to leadership.”

Voice for Likoni, Symbol for Many

As 2027 draws nearer, Hamadi’s campaign continues to gain momentum. But beyond the politics, her story is inspiring a broader conversation — about women breaking barriers, journalists entering governance, and the power of purpose-driven leadership.

“Whether in journalism or politics, truth and service remain non-negotiable,” she says firmly. “I may have left the anchor’s desk, but I’m still telling stories — only this time, through action.”

For Mwanahamisi Hamadi, anchoring hope in Likoni isn’t just a campaign slogan — it’s a continuation of everything she has always stood for: voice, empathy, and the courage to serve.
