National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetangula has appealed to young people in Western Kenya to prioritize acquiring National Identification Cards (IDs) and registering as voters, emphasizing that the region’s strength in the 2027 General Election will hinge on its ability to rally numbers.

Addressing Members of the County Assembly of Kakamega, who paid him a courtesy visit at Parliament Buildings, Wetang’ula underscored the central role of IDs in civic participation. The delegation was led by Sheywe Ward nominated MCA, Ms. Jael Omunyangoli.

“There is no excuse today—getting a National ID is free and straightforward. It is the gateway to exercising one’s democratic rights. No youth in Western Kenya should be left behind,” he remarked.

The Speaker noted that low uptake of IDs and voter cards has historically weakened the region’s influence at the ballot. He challenged grassroots leaders to champion civic awareness campaigns to reverse voter apathy and ensure the youth are active participants in national decision-making.

Beyond voter registration, Wetang’ula pressed leaders to prioritize unity and shun divisive politics. He stressed that a common agenda would position Western Kenya more strongly in national negotiations and decision-making.

“Grassroots leaders embody the people’s voice. Our responsibility is to consolidate our strength, not fragment it. The future of Western Kenya depends on how united we are,” he stated.

The Speaker commended the MCAs for aligning their efforts with the Kenya Kwanza government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), adding that collective resolve is the foundation of greater political and economic influence.

Looking ahead to the November 27, 2025 by-elections, Wetang’ula described the polls as a “litmus test” for the region’s ability to demonstrate unity and political muscle ahead of 2027.

Ms. Omunyangoli expressed gratitude for the Speaker’s mentorship, noting that young leaders in the region draw inspiration from his guidance. “We value your support and leadership as we take up our responsibilities at the grassroots,” she said.

Also present at the meeting were MPs Ben Shinali (Ikolomani), Titus Khamala (Lurambi), Elsie Muhanda (Kakamega Woman Rep), and Bungoma Senator David Wakoli. The leaders echoed the Speaker’s call for unity and mass mobilization, reaffirming their commitment to positioning the Mulembe nation as a decisive force in Kenya’s political landscape.
