Nairobi, September 25, 2025 — The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the death of a Kenyan police officer who went missing in Haiti while serving in the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM).

According to a statement issued on Thursday, the officer Benedict Kabiru, went missing on March 25, 2025, after an ambush on a main supply route in the Pont-Sonde area of the Artibonite Department. The NPS was notified the following day and immediately informed the officer’s family.

The MSSM, working with the Haitian National Police (HNP), launched a search and rescue operation, but later informed NPS that the officer had died.

“In a tragic turn of events, the National Police Service received information regarding the death of the missing police officer, and the family has been notified,” said NPS spokesperson Muchangi Nyaga. “The Service extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen officer and assures them of its unwavering support.”

The police also announced that the body of Corporal Kennedy Mutuku Nzuve, who died in a separate road accident in Nairobi on September 1, will arrive in the country on September 26.

Kenya’s Mission in Haiti

Kenya is leading a UN-backed multinational security mission to help stabilise Haiti, a country battling political turmoil and widespread gang violence. The mission has committed at least 1,000 Kenyan police officers, despite legal challenges in Nairobi questioning its constitutionality.

Human rights groups and opposition politicians have criticised the deployment, arguing that Kenya should prioritise its domestic security concerns. Supporters, however, say the mission strengthens Kenya’s diplomatic profile and demonstrates global solidarity.

The death of the officer is the first confirmed Kenyan casualty in the Haiti mission, underlining the dangers facing the contingent as heavily armed gangs continue to control large parts of the country.
