President William Ruto left Nairobi on Sunday for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he will attend the second Africa Climate Summit and take part in the inauguration of a major hydroelectric dam.

The summit brings together heads of state and government to advance Africa’s role in climate action and green growth. Ruto is expected to launch a report titled “From Nairobi to Addis Ababa: Africa’s Journey of Climate Action and Partnership,” which reviews progress since the 2023 Nairobi Declaration, assesses current realities, and outlines future pathways.

He will also witness the signing of the Cooperation Framework for the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII), which seeks to mobilize investment and coordinate technical support for green projects. The initiative will work with African governments, financiers, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, and private sector players.

As chair of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), Ruto is expected to push for fair resource valuation, equitable carbon pricing, and financial reforms to ease debt and climate risks. He will also participate in climate finance talks aimed at unlocking investment and boosting Africa’s influence in global reforms.

Beyond the climate summit, Ruto will address the Africa-CARICOM Summit on reparatory justice, debt sustainability, and transcontinental cooperation. He is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings to strengthen ties, expand trade, and promote joint action on global challenges.
