Nairobi, Kenya, October 19, 2025 — The government has confirmed that this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations will proceed as scheduled on Monday, October 20th, 2025, at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County, despite the nation mourning the death of former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga.
In a statement released by Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura, the government expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Raila Odinga, describing him as “a great hero and statesman whose indomitable spirit shaped our nation’s journey.” Raila will be laid to rest on Sunday at his home in Bondo.
Dr. Mwaura said that the national holiday remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s collective identity, where citizens gather to honor the sacrifices of the country’s heroes. He noted that while some side events such as the Energy Week and Media Breakfast have been postponed to allow space for mourning, the main celebrations will unfold in full honor of Kenya’s heroes, both past and present.
The government also urged Kenyans to turn out in large numbers for Mashujaa Day, uniting to celebrate the enduring legacy of Raila Odinga and all national heroes.
“Let us not only mourn but rise in the spirit of harambee, honoring our fallen hero by recommitting to the dream of a stronger, united Kenya,” the statement read.
