The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is planning to evict hundreds of hawkers and business people at the busy Likoni crossing channel.

The move has been triggered by the government parastatal’s objective to revamp the channel and make it a mordern facility.

According to images released by KPA on Sunday, revamping the Likoni ferry crossing channel to a modern facility will improve daily transport services.

However, on Monday, hawkers and business community operating in both sides of the Likoni crossing channel (Mombasa Island and Likoni mainland south) dissaproved the move saying it will dislocate them from their operating areas.

They said KPA did not engage them in the implementation of the project or offer them an alternative operating area.

However, KPA states that the project aims at improving transport activities at the busy crossing channel where over, 300, 000 people use daily as well as over 6,000 motorists.

Likoni ferry channel directly connects the country with neighbouring Tanzania through the Likoni – Lungalunga highway.
