Britam General Insurance has introduced a specialized Electric Vehicle (EV) insurance cover in Kenya, marking a major step toward supporting the country’s transition to green mobility. The product, available for both fully electric and hybrid vehicles, positions Britam at the forefront of sustainable innovation in the insurance sector.

The launch aligns with the government’s Draft National e-Mobility Policy, which targets EVs to account for 5% of all new vehicle registrations by 2025. As Kenya’s EV adoption accelerates, Britam’s solution addresses critical ownership challenges — from costly battery replacements to the scarcity of repair infrastructure.

At the heart of the package is the Battery Protect Cover Extension, designed to safeguard an EV’s most valuable asset: its battery and electric motor system. Customers also benefit from protection for home-charging equipment and an out-of-charge recovery service, which tows vehicles to the nearest charging station when stranded.

“This EV insurance cover reflects Britam’s commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said James Mbithi, CEO and Principal Officer of Britam General Insurance. “We are not only meeting the evolving needs of our customers but also driving Kenya’s transition to a low-carbon economy in a responsible way.”

The cover goes beyond EV-specific risks, offering broad protection under Britam’s standard motor insurance terms — including accidental damage, theft, fire, floods, and malicious acts. Additional features include cover against political violence and terrorism, provision of courtesy vehicles, road rescue services, and excess protection.

To enhance accessibility, premiums are structured to remain affordable, with options for both lump-sum and monthly installment payments. The policy also extends to privately used electric motorcycles, widening its impact on Kenya’s growing two-wheeler EV segment.

Britam’s EV insurance launch complements its wider sustainability agenda. The company has already installed three EV charging stations with six ports and a 183-panel solar carport at its Nairobi headquarters, underscoring its commitment to driving sustainable business practices.

With this milestone, Britam is positioning itself not only as an insurer but also as a catalyst for Kenya’s green mobility revolution.
