Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has claimed there are plans to attack him before or during the burial of the late Raila Odinga, urging a peaceful send-off for the ODM leader amid growing political tension in Nairobi.
Nairobi, Kenya, Oct’ 17, 2025 – Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has alleged that there are plans to attack him on or before the burial of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, linking the threats to emerging political divisions within ODM and Nairobi’s succession race.
In a statement on Friday, the outspoken legislator said he is aware of those behind the plot and called for a peaceful farewell for the ODM leader.
“There are plans to attack me on or before the day of Baba’s burial. I am aware of the culprits behind the scheme. It is my prayer that we give Baba the befitting send-off that he deserves devoid of unwarranted violence,” Babu said.
The MP, known for his fiery political style, has recently distanced himself from the direction taken by the ODM party, accusing it of aligning itself with President William Ruto’s government. He has, however, maintained that he will not join the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Babu, who has declared interest in the Nairobi gubernatorial race in 2027, is seen as one of the key figures shaping the next political contest in the capital. His ambition has reportedly put him at odds with current Governor Johnson Sakaja, with tensions between the two simmering in recent months.
Political observers say the rivalry could intensify following indications that Raila Odinga had grown increasingly close to Sakaja in his final months, a move interpreted as a signal of political realignment in Nairobi.
The Embakasi East legislator urged authorities to take the alleged threats seriously and ensure his safety ahead of the state burial of the ODM leader scheduled for Sunday 19 in Bondo, Siaya County.
