Human rights defender Boniface Mwangi who was arrested at his Lukenya home in Machakos County on Saturday, July 19, 2025 will face terror related charges, according to detectives.
Mwangi is alleged to have facilitated terrorism activities during the June 25, 2025 protests in commemoration of the June 25, 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests where over 60 youth were killed by police.
Mwangi has been a strong opponent of President William Ruto’s leadership, accusing it of shrinking the civic space and tarnishing the constitution, further criticising the government for killing innocent youth opposing the government oppressive leadership.
He was later escorted to his office at Mageuzi Hub, Rose Avenue in Hurlingham, Nairobi, where police searched his office and recovered nine assorted external hard drives, two laptops, company seals for Brave Media Ltd and Courage Ltd, a company stamp, six cheque books, copies of stamp duty documents, two unused tear gas canisters and one 7.62mm blank round.
Police also recovered two mobile phones, a laptop and several notebooks during his arrest.
Mwangi is currently detained at Pangani Police Station.
He is expected to be arraigned tomorrow, Monday, July 21, 2025, for offences related to facilitation of terrorist acts and unlawful possession of ammunition.
