Two people have died and ten others were injured following a stampede at the Nyayo National Stadium during Raila Odinga’s state funeral service on Friday.

Nairobi, Kenya, Oct’ 17, 2025 – Two people have died and ten others sustained serious injuries following a stampede at the Nyayo National Stadium during the state funeral service of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Friday.

Witnesses said the incident occurred as mourners jostled to enter the venue for the national prayers and final viewing of the late ODM leader’s body. Emergency teams and police officers on site quickly responded to the situation.

The injured were taken to different hospitals within the capital city, Nairobi, for treatment, according to rescue officials.

The tragedy adds to Thursday’s chaos at Kasarani Stadium, where three people were killed and several others injured after gunshots were fired during an earlier body-viewing session.

Vincent Oguttu and Evans Kiche, 40-year-old father of three lost their lives after police fired to restore order at the Kasarani Sports Centre during public viewing of the body.

The two incidents have raised questions about crowd management and safety preparedness during the high-profile national mourning events that have attracted tens of thousands of Kenyans.

Authorities were yet to issue an official statement by press time.
