The once vocal vibrant and tireless Human rights defender Hussein Khalid has been missing in action since the beginning of the year, 2024, where has he been?
His intense, extensive and vibrancy in defending for human rights in the Coast region puts him in the limelight, criticising the government following gross human rights violation mostly in the coastal region of Kenya.
His efforts took the Coast region at the heart of other Global activists who would closely monitor the trends on human rights violation in the region, document and look for possible solutions from authorities.
The extra judicial killings and enforced disappearances remained key human rights violation aspects that the fearless, tireless, vibrant rights defender led Coast-based rights groups to battle them.
However, in recent months, Mr Khalid has been missing in action, leaving most activists and Coast dwellers asking on the whereabouts of the once fearless, tireless, vocal and vibrant human rights defender.
Rumours circulated that he might have joined the National government, a reason why he now serves the public on the other side, probably forced by circumstances to lie low on human rights activism.
Known for putting it in black and white, criticising the government on various governance issues and urging it to play it’s role in safeguarding human rights in the country, Khalid has been taking the government of the day on its toes, pushing it to serve Kenyans indiscriminately.
Khalid served as Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) Executive Director for about two decades before launching another rights lobby, Haki Africa in 2012 where he served in the same capacity as the Organisations’ Executive Director.
However, Haki Africa has been recently quite lacking all the vibrancy it had some few years ago. It is spearheaded by a Lawyer, Yusuf Abubakar, a clear indication that Mr Hussein left the organisation he launched, over a decade ago.
Reliable information indicate that the Global Human Rights Czar and renowned human rights defender is currently focussing on human rights issues but at international level.
Further information revealed that the activist launched a different organisation in Nairobi known as Voices of Communities And Leaders (Vocal Africa).
Vocal Africa focuses on human rights issues in Africa, a new aspect the renowned rights defender is weighing in.
His detachment from coastal activism became evident after Haki Africa launched it’s Africa regional office in Nairobi, four years ago. Since then, Mr Khalid has been operating from the Kenya’s Capital, Nairobi until recently where he is said to have ditched the organisation.
With Vocal Africa in place, it seems Khalid is focusing on the Global platform while keeping abreast his passion of fighting for human rights globally.
