German-based non-profit organisation, Westerwelle Foundation launched an innovation hub in Mombasa to support startups.
The Westerwelle Startup Haus Mombasa (WSHM) launched at Mombasa Mall, is the Foundation’s first hub in Kenya and fourth in Africa after Tunisia, Tanzania and Rwanda.
Speaking during a pre-launch media briefing, Westerwelle Foundation Chairman, Michael Mronz said through the hub, the Foundation aimed to unlock the potential of local talents, empower entrepreneurs, and ensure sustainable growth of entrepreneurs in the region.
He added that the decision to base the hub in Mombasa highlighted the region’s strategic position as a gateway to East Africa, its rich blue economy, and the hidden talent within its coastal community.
The hub will offer incubation and acceleration programs, co-working spaces, and networking events to empower entrepreneurs and small businesses in the region.
“This initiative is more than just supporting startups; it is about working with local entrepreneurs and stakeholders to strengthen the entire community and create a hub of innovation that drives lasting change,” said Joshua Murima, Westerwelle Foundation Kenya Country Director.
WSHM programs will support special groups traditionally disadvantaged in terms of business opportunities. It seeks to partner with the government, local community, startup investors, and other organisations to address the unique challenges entrepreneurs face in the region.
“We believe that different entrepreneurs have different needs at different stages. Our programs are designed for the needs of entrepreneurs and businesses. We work with entrepreneurs from the pre-idea stage to the scale-up level. We drive a deliberate effort to make our programs as inclusive as possible, both by gender and age representation,” said WF Country Director Murima.
He called on other organisations and investors to join in supporting Kenyan entrepreneurs and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the hub.
Meanwhile, the Foundation’s first program at the hub, DigiTalents, is currently supporting 30 young digital talents through technical training, professional coaching, and market connections.
DigiTalents focuses on providing digital skills to young entrepreneurs.
