Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has officially launched a new R120 million locally built multi-purpose vessel, Yarona, to enhance marine operations and environmental response efforts at the Port of Cape Town.

Built by Damen Shipyards Cape Town, Yarona is the latest addition to TNPA’s Marine Fleet Renewal Programme, which is aimed at boosting service delivery and port efficiency at South Africa’s commercial seaports. The vessel’s name, Yarona, meaning “Ours” in Setswana, was selected through an internal staff competition and unveiled during a traditional christening ceremony at the shipyard.

Designed as a versatile workboat, Yarona is equipped to carry out a wide range of critical port functions including pollution control, oil spill response, debris removal, quay-wall repairs, maintenance dredging, fender replacement, and lighthouse support.

Measuring 19.05 meters in length and 8.36 meters in beam, the vessel features an all-welded steel hull and superstructure, making it highly durable and efficient in demanding harbour conditions. It will also enable quicker responses to navigation hazards and other environmental risks.

Speaking at the launch, Transnet Group Chief Operating Officer Solly Letsoalo said the new vessel reflects the company’s commitment to infrastructure-led growth under its “Reinvent for Growth” strategy.

“At the heart of our Reinvent for Growth Strategy is infrastructure-led growth and a commitment to reliable and efficient operations. We remain focused on modernising our fleet and ensuring fit-for-purpose infrastructure to meet the needs of our customers and the broader South African economy,” Letsoalo stated.

Damen Shipyards Cape Town Director Sefale Montsi highlighted the project’s impact on local manufacturing and economic empowerment. He said the initiative has helped drive localisation, supplier development, and job creation, particularly among youth and individuals from previously disadvantaged communities. The construction of Yarona created approximately 18 local job opportunities over a 14-month period. Once operational, the vessel will be manned by five TNPA crew members, including three new recruits.
