Rights group, International Justice Mission (IJM) is calling for immediate action against the perpetrator of sexual violence and the killing of a Kilifi minor, Farida Kadzo Changawa.
According to IJM, Kadzo 17, survived sexual violence back in 2021 and last Friday she was stabbed and killed by her boyfriend.
The heinous act attracted the intervention of IJM which is calling for justice in cases of violence against women and children in the country.
“The International Justice Mission Kenya is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Farida Kadzo Changawa, a young survivor of sexual violence, who was killed on the evening of Friday, June 6, 2025, in Madina, Kijipwa, Kilifi County,” read part of the IJM statement.
Farida, who had previously survived a defilement case and was receiving support through the justice system, was reportedly stabbed after declining to accompany her boyfriend to a family event. She succumbed to her injuries shortly after returning home.
The matter was immediately reported to the police, and investigations are ongoing.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Farida’s family and community. Her death is a painful reminder of the persistent and deadly threat of Violence Against Women and Children in Kenya, particularly in vulnerable communities,” further read the statement.
IJM thrashed earlier media reports that the incident was about “love triangle”.
“It is about power, control, and the systemic failure to protect survivors of violence. Farida’s story reflects the harsh reality that many girls and women face where poverty, gender inequality, and weak enforcement of laws create a deadly environment for survivors,” the statements reiterates.
Petition
The IJM is now demanding that the criminal justice system acts swiftly and diligently in investigating and prosecuting the perpetrator in that particular case.
The organisation is also urging the media to report responsibly and sensitively, centering the dignity and humanity of survivors, while at the same time urging the public to stand in solidarity with survivors and demand accountability and systemic change.
“Farida’s life mattered. Her story must not end in silence. Let this tragedy be a turning point in the fight against femicide and all forms of violence against women and children,” the statement further reiterated.
