Nominated Senator Miraj Abdilah has appealed to County governments to invest in conducive environment to enable youth engage in business activities.
Miraj said Governors have a bigger role to play at the grassroots level to accelerate vibrant business environment for the youth, adding, such steps will shelve them off the burden of endless search for employment.
Addressing the press in Mombasa, Miraj noted that the youth have been complaining of heavy taxation among other obstacles that obstructs their urge to indulge in business.
The Senator further said youth who launched small businesses should be given at least three months grace period before they are taxed by their County governments so that their business do not collapse even before they stabilise.
Senator Miraj further urged the national government too to initiate measures which will enable youth initiate and sustain their small scale businesses.
She said some youth have for long struggled to sustain their small business and become self-reliant but because of the heavy taxes by the County governments, they painfully closed them down.
Action
“I will officially write a letter to the Council of Governors Chairperson, Kirinyaga Governor, Anne Waiguru urging her to advance the youth needs within the counties and offer grace period to youth engaging in business for at least three months before they start paying taxes and other required license charges,” she said.
The politician also urged Governors to equip youth with relevant skills that will enable them sustain their lives.
“For example the Blue economy sector can directly benefit youth from the Coast region thus the need for Coast Governors to invest more on training youth from these counties on relevant technical causes so that they reap from the vast Blue economy initiatives,” noted Senator Miraj.
Miraj said equipping the youth with relevant skills aligned with the available natural resources around them is one critical way of fighting unemployment among the youth in the country.
She further urged Coast Governors to always advance youth needs so that they do not feel discriminated and their development ideas thrashed.
