NAIROBI, Kenya—November 27, 2025—The Kenyan Senate convened on Thursday, 27 November 2025, to consider impeachment charges filed against Nyamira Governor Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo, following a resolution passed by the Nyamira County Assembly on November 25, 2025. The sitting, was officially called by Senate Speaker Amason Jeffah Kingi, who invoked Article 181 of the Constitution, Section 33(3)(a) of the County Governments Act, and Standing Order 80(1)(a) of the Senate Standing Orders.

In a notice dated 26 November 2025, Speaker Kingi invited Senators to a special sitting to consider the allegations against Governor Nyaribo. The House will decide whether to refer the case to a special committee or handle it in plenary. Senators are expected to examine evidence presented by both the County Assembly and the Governor’s defence team before determining whether the charges meet the constitutional threshold for removal from office.

Governor Nyaribo was impeached by the Nyamira County Assembly on November 25, 2025, with 23 of the 28 MCAs present voting in support of the motion, including six proxy votes cast on behalf of absent members.

This marks the third time Governor Nyaribo has faced impeachment, reflecting persistent political tensions in the county. The motion, moved by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, cited multiple alleged violations, including gross misconduct and abuse of office, approving and participating in unauthorized “Bunge Mashinani” sessions between October 2024 and July 2025, enacting the County Supplementary Appropriations Bill 2024/25 without proper process.

The MCAs also accuse Nyaribo of failing to appoint a substantive County Service Board and statutory boards for major towns, usurping powers of the Auditor-General, illegally appointing a County Executive Member for Agriculture without following legal procedures, and recruiting county staff outside approved budgetary and constitutional processes.

The assembly alleges these actions constitute gross misconduct, mismanagement of public funds, and breaches of statutory and constitutional procedures.

Following the Assembly’s motion, the Senate will review the charges, hear evidence and arguments from both sides, and make a determination on whether Governor Nyaribo should be removed from office. If the Senate upholds the motion, the Deputy governor will assume office in accordance with the Constitution, marking a decisive moment in Nyamira County’s leadership and governance.
