Nominated Senator Miraj Abdillah recently broke down at the Senate, demanding answers to the chronic land tussles facing Mombasa and the larger coastal residents.

Miraj, who scoffed at the National Land Commission (NLC) stating that the commission has failed in advancing the coastal land rights, urged the Senate to intervene and ensure Coast residents and more specific Mombasa county residents’ land rights are respected.

The politician demanded the Senate to summon NLC to explain to the public the meaning of ‘historical injustices’ facing the Coast dwellers.

She directly blamed the Commission for safeguarding the interests of private developers, land grabbers and mostly absentee land lords.

“Personally, I asked those saying they own larger parcels of land in Mwembe tayari and Mwembe kuku areas within Mombasa Island how they actually owned the large chunks of land and true to my word none could explain this scenario,” noted the Senator amid tears rolling down her cheeks before the Senate.

She said Mombasa residents have all the rights to land ownership and in fact they are the rightfully owners of such parcels of land.

Firm stand

“We coastal residents will not remain squatters forever, this problem should be amicably addressed and it will be addressed,” Miraj assured Mombasa and the larger coastal residents.

She revealed that Mwembe tayari parcels of land are registered under the name Seif Bin Seif who is nowhere to be seen, however, locals have for years been forced to pay ground rate to his alleged relatives.

“We can no longer remain slaves in our own native land. How did these families acquire our ancestral land? I am appealing to this honourable house to safeguard our land rights and quell the chronic land issues and historical injustices facing Mombasa residents and the larger Coast region.

The Senator appealed for concerted efforts from Coast leaders and residents in fighting for their land rights.

“We no longer have any inheritance. Our grandfathers left us these parcels of land but today we are told absentee land lords are the bona fide owners of the land land how?” Senator Miraj questioned.

She blamed the National Land Commission, further urging the Senate to summon the Commissioners so that they can vividly explain their stand on the historical injustices and how the coastal residents can once again own their ancestral land that was grabbed from them by the said absentee land lords.
