
Police in Kaloleni, Kilifi County are detaining key suspect in the recent fire incident that gutted down the entire upper floor of St. John’s Girls Secondary School dormitory on January, 31.
According to Kaloleni police, Irene Kerubo Mauti, the school’s matron was at around 9 pm the same day seen entering the largest dormitory while the students were on there evening preps, and few minutes later she hurriedly walked out and the dormitory burst into huge flames.
The whole scenario was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the school.
“It just took five minutes after the matron ran out of the dormitory and the fire started, she remains the key suspect in our investigations into the cause of the inferno,” read part of the police statement.
Police say that the huge fire burnt the entire upper floor of the largest Mt. Elgon dormitory, luckily the students were not inside the facility during the incident.
Property worthy millions of shillings was destroyed and the learners could not salvage anything considering the magnitude of the fire.
Police are yet to establish what exactly was used to ignite the huge flames but investigations are underway.
The Wednesday evening inferno at the school forced parents to rush to the school at night to affirm the safety of their children as the worrying information traversed first on social media and other platforms.
The School administration says the whole issue has been handed to security agencies for thorough investigations and a conclusive answer to the cause of the fire.
Kerubo is expected in court on Monday after indepth interrogation by authorities.
No injuries or deaths were reported during the incident.
