Police in Mombasa on Wednesday arrested over 150 youth who have been terrorising residents and traders in broad daylight.
In a security operation that was initiated in the Mombasa Central Business District (CBC) and escalated in various other parts of Majengo, Ganjoni, Bondeni, Tononoka and the entire Old town area, police nabbed gangs of youth who have been raiding and stealing valuables from business owners and dwellers.
The operation, was spearheaded by Central police officers and the Mombasa county Inspectorate led by the Director Said Nyerere.
Recently, Mombasa residents raised concerns over increased insecurity in the county.
Youth have ganged up, armed with crude weapons among them pangas, machetes, metal roads among other weapons raiding homes, injuring locals and stealing valuables and cash.
Recently, police in Likoni Sub county arrested nine suspects who have sent Likoni residents into panic.
According to Likoni Police some of the suspects after terrosing locals in the area vanish to their hideouts in the nearby Kwale county.
Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Nur warned that security agencies would ruthlessly deal with criminal gangs terrorising Mombasa residents.
“I as well ask parents to take their parenting roles seriously because we will spare none in battling insecurity in Mombasa county,” he recently said.
The youth are detained at the Central police station in Mombasa waiting to be arraigned in court on Thursday.
