Police from Inuka police station in Likoni Subcounty, Mombasa on Tuesday shot and killed a suspected thug.
The armed gang of three was found terrorising locals around Ghazal mosque in Shonda area, Likoni Subcounty.
Though police officers on patrol order them to surrender, they threatened to attack the police using their pangas.
“It is then that police fatally shot one of them on the head. On seeing the situation the other two fled,” read part of the police report.
Police recovered a panga during the incident.
The body of the suspect only identified as Khamis alias Shungi was taken to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue (CGTRH) for autopsy.
Likoni has been singled out as the most affected area with mushrooming criminal gangs in all the parts of the Subcounty.
However, police have vowed to tame the gangs saying none will be spared in the ongoing security operations.
“We are not that badly placed. However since we clearly understand the problem we will face it head-on we assure Likoni residents adequate security,” said recently Likoni Police Commander, Geoffrey Ruheni.
He called for maximum cooperation between locals and security agencies in the area so as to curtail insecurity in the entire Likoni Subcounty.
This follows a series of insecurity incidents in the area which have sent locals into panic.
