Some of the opposition leaders who were attacked by goons and police officers in Kigumo Constituency, Murang’a County on Sunday have formally lodged a complaint with the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), over the incident.

Led by DAP-Kenya Party Leader, Eugen Wamalwa the politicians said police roughed them up, beat and pointed guns at them forcing them to declare support for President William Ruto re-lection in August, 2027.

Addressing journalists at the IPOA offices in Nairobi on Monday, Wamalwa said the security apparatus are being misused by the state, warning that such dangerous trends may plunge the country into anarchy.

Wamalwa noted that the two years before the next general election is very critical and delicate at the same time demanding actions from IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Isaack Hassan.

“What was the mistakes the opposition leaders did to deserve such police brutality? IPOA should stand firm because we are not heading to the right direction as the 2027 general elections quickly approaches,” said Wamalwa.

“Two term”

Speaking on the incident where the leaders were from a church service at AIPCA Christ The King at Kahuro in Kigumo Constituency, Murang’a county on Sunday, Machakos Town MP, Victor Munyaka stated that they were forced to lie down at a gunpoint singing “Two term”.

“We were forced to sing two term to save our lives. Remember we were beaten, harassed and teargassed by the police officers. They shot us in our vehicles forcing us to abandon them and run for our safety, their aim was to kill us,” said Munyaka.

He cautioned that the misuse of security agencies by the state may yield into wrangles especially during this heated political campaign season.

IPOA

On his part, Nyandarua Senator John Methu urged IPOA to take action against the police and stop its laxity.

He called out on the commission saying it’s not there to serve the President and his allies but the public.

“Why were we disrupted and harassed while the president and his allies are freely conducting their meeting anywhere they want? Why don’t they attack politicians allied to the Kenya Kwanza government?” posed Methu.

Responding to the issue, Mr. Hassan, a former IEBC Chairperson warned that the country is heading to a very volatile state, politically.

He called for a truce between the opposition and the government on various political matters.

“Having been at the helm of the Independent electoral body and now at the IPOA, I must agree that there is a problem and the two competing sides should meet and solve these differences before it’s too late,” stated Hassan.
