A middle aged man was on Tuesday seriously injured after police hurled a teargas canister at him along the Moi Avenue, Mombasa.
The anti-riot police were dispersing protesters who were participating in the ongoing anti-government demonstration.
The man, is suffering from muteness and could not express himself to the police, who instead tried to pursue him during the protests.
He was seated along Moi Avenue corridors selling his goods among them sweets and snacks.
The police harassed and oppressed him despite the vendor trying expressing himself by using sign language, the police ignored.
The Gen-Z protesters and other human rights activists helped the man by giving him first aid and later rushed him to the Coast General Teaching and Referral hospital where he is receiving treatment.
He sustained serious head injuries after a teargas canister hit him right on the forehead.
The protesters castigated police for such brutality, saying they will relentlessly protest against Kenya Kwanza government.
Meanwhile Africa humanitarian organisation Marafiki Relief Aid Africa said that apart from the physically challenged person who sustained serious injuries, Tuesday’ protests were relatively calm.
The organisation’s Executive Director Rafik Rauf noted that few protesters came out on Tuesday for the anti-government demos compared to the past protests.
“Despite the minimal number of protesters at least 75 percent of businesses within Mombasa island remained closed for the better part of the day. People feared that their businesses would be vandalised and they opted to close them down for the entire day,” said Rauf.
However, police thwarted the protests around Fontanella round-about that connects Digo, Moi Avenue Nkrumah road and Nyerere Avenue that head to Likoni ferry channel.
The town remained relatively calm in the entire afternoon.
The youth are planning for more protests on Tuesday next week.
