One person died while four others sustained serious injuries after the house they were constructing collapsed in Mombasa on Monday afternoon.
The five workers were going about their daily activities at the house in Sega area within Majengo, Mombasa Island before the building tumbled burying them alive.
However, four were rescued under the debris but the fifth person did not make it.
The four constructors were rushed to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) in critical condition while the deceased was taken to the hospitals morgue.
Mombasa Roads, Transport and Infrastructure CECM, Engineer Dan Manyalla, who is also in charge of the County Disaster preparedness department led a multi-agency team to the site to assess the situation.
“We have immediately shut down this construction site until we are sure that through our assessment the site is safe for the construction work to go on,” he said.
Mr Manyalla also said that a second house adjacent to the construction site had developed huge cracks and note that after an inspection conducted by experts all the tenants in the adjacent house might be forced to vacate the building to avert another ugly incident.
“We are closely working with other stakeholders including the DCI and our focus is not only on this particular building under construction but our inspection exercise will focus on all buildings whether commercial or residential within Mombasa county,” said Manyalla.
