
The body of a 54-year old Abdul-Aziz Abdallah who succumbed after he fell in a pit latrine on Sunday evening in Mombasa has been retrieved.
Mombasa County Disaster Management team has confirmed that only one person fell into the pit latrine after it caved in on Sunday around 5pm in Bamburi mwisho area within Kadzandani ward Kisauni Sub county.
The late Abdallah was among football fans watching thrilling football match when the accident happened.
The video hall was built on top of a septic tank where not even the owner of the was aware about the septic tank underneath.
The Mombasa County Government disaster management team led by the Chief Officer Ibrahim Basafar confirmed that the septic tank is among the oldest and residents and other landlords in the area were unaware of the deep septic tank of about 120 feet.
“We have confirmed that it was one person Abdul-Aziz Abdallah aged 54 years old who fell into the septic tank and died. Not four or two as reported earlier by eye witnesses,” confirmed Mr Basafar.
The body was retrieved around 1 am on Tuesday morning and was handed to the police.
The family which has been camping at the accident scene since Sunday evening said that they will not lodge any complaint on the matter and they will bury their kin on Tuesday afternoon at the Kikowani Muslim cemetery within Mombasa Island.
“With the recovery mission complete, we have officially closed the rescue and recovery mission,” noted Basafar.
The County government has vowed to assess the area so as to assure residents of their safety.
