No turning back! KNUT, KUPPET to paralyse learning countrywide

The Monday teacher’s strike is still on with teachers advising parents to safely keep their children at home.

Both KNUT and KUPPET have vowed to relentlessly take the government head-on until all their demands are fully met.

Both the two factions who have been advancing for teachers rights and welfare across the country have demanded the employment of Junior School teachers on permanent and pensionable basis.

KUPPET Secretary General Maurice Akello Misori noted that there is no provision anywhere that allows the government to employ teachers on internship basis urging the government to admit it’s mistakes and rectify the situation by absorbing all the 46,000 Junior School teachers.

‘You cannot dangle with our children’s education. The government must give the children quality education at the Junior School level and we demand that it immediately releases the 18 billion shillings to absorb the 46,000 Junior School teachers on permanent basis,” said Misori.

Misori said the teachers are qualified and should be deployed on permanent basis.

He also demanded for a fully implementation of the 2023 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Backing KUPPET, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) urged their teachers to stay away from schools.

KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu said the teachers are demanding for full implementation of the 2021-25 CBA.

They are also demanding for the allocation of 15 billion shillings for medical cover and promotion of over 130,000 stagnated and release of teachers emoluments for July, 2024.

“Despite teachers being deducted statutory remittance since June this year, the money has not been remitted to NSSF and including bank loans.

Meanwhile, KUPPET Mombasa branch has released an itenerary of the week’s events during the strike.

The Teachers meeting point will be at Elephant tusks along Moi Avenue every morning, 8 am.

The teachers will camp at the TSC Coast regional offices at the Uhuru na Kazi building in Mombasa on Monday, demonstrate and occupy Mvita MP Mohammed Soud Machele offices on Tuesday, on Wednesday, they will occupy the Mombasa Senetor Mohammed Faki offices.

On Thursday, the teachers will protests and occupy the Coast regional offices in Mombasa and on Friday they will go back and occupy the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) at Uhuru na Kazi building before they officially close week one teacher strike schedule.
