The current Nationwide rehabilitation program implemented by the Spouse of Deputy President Pastor Dorcas Rigathi and other partners has hugely accelerated the harm reduction efforts in the Coast region.

The program that has enabled many youth once entangled into drug use, recover and became productive members in the society is implemented in various regions where youths are vulnerable to drug abuse.

Speaking in Mombasa, renowned anti-drug activist, Taib Abdulrahman noted that the launch of the program is a shot in the arm to already existing rehabilitation programs which have positively impacted the fight against drug and substance abuse disorders among Coastal communities.

Taib who currently spearheads the drug rehabilitation programs at the anti-drug lobby Reachout Centre Trust (RCT), notes that with such support from top government officials, the fight against drug and substance disorders is poised for a major milestone.

“We have been working as close partners between Reachout Centre Trust and the office of the Spouse of Deputy president Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, and with such concerted efforts we will dissuade, treat and reintegrate the recovering drug users so that they dedicate themselves in serving their own communities,” noted Mr Taib recently.

RCT manages a fully functional rehabilitation centre in Likoni and an extended unit known as Halfway House along Shelly beach road within Likoni Sub county, Mombasa where after four months of serious rehabilitation, treatment, counselling and reintegration, the recovering drug users are taken through training on various hands on skills so that they embrace livelihood programs at their homes.

Among the initiatives undertaken at Halfway House is poultry rearing, vegetable farming and continuous capacity building programs for the recovering drug users.

“Under these efforts, those who successfully complete the recovering program are absorbed by the organisation under its outreach arm,  some with their beauty therapy skills (mostly female recovering drug users) among other hands on skills launch their income generating initiatives within their homes,” he stated.

During the November collaboration with Dr Dorcas Rigathi, the Spouse of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a total of 21 youth immersed into drug addiction were registered for the rehabilitation program in Likoni Sub county, Mombasa.

All the 21 who voluntarily registered for the four months rehabilitation program were fully sponsored by Pastor Dorcas, who also promised to oversee their recovery and stability journey after the programme.

“We have partnered with Reachout Centre Trust, we will continue working closely with Mr Taib and all other partners so that we help out these children and enable them focus on their lives,” she noted.

Dr Dorcas together with the RCT Executive Director also administered another cohort at the Eden House rehabilitation centre in Diani, Kwale county.

The spouse of the Deputy President promised to walk with the recovering drug users throughout their recovering journey and ensure they are economic stable so that they do not relapse.

The government operates only one rehabilitation centre in Miritini within Jomvu Sun county, Mombasa.
