Mombasa based Muslim clerics are accusing rights group, Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) for allegedly foregrounding Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) rights.

The clerics drawn from various quarters within Mombasa county scoffed at the human rights organisation for allegedly fighting and defending for the rights of same gender sex within the Coastal communities.

Led by Sheikh Abou Qattada, the clerics blamed MUHURI for safeguarding and promoting ‘ungodly’ affairs among Coastal communities.

According to Sheikh Qattada, since former Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga was appointed as MUHURI Chairperson in March, 2023, the organisation has ignored the basic human rights activism and exerted more efforts in advancing LGBTQ community rights.

“We know on September, 30 MUHURI Chairperson addressed journalists in Nairobi on the rights of the LGBTQ community, we ask ourselves what rights? Have they been denied healthcare services, are they denied basic or social services? Or it’s just a matter of campaigning and brainwashing our youth so as to attract them into it?” posed Sheikh Qattada.

He noted that the main objective of such sponsored campaigns is to twist the reasoning of our youth so that they find things like ‘men having sex with men’ as normal acts within the Coastal community.

“Lets not normalise the abnormal, there is no any religion that accepts gay or lesbianism acts, as Muslim clerics, we will unite with our non-muslim religious leaders from the region to safeguard our young generation from these campaigns with hidden agenda,” noted the vocal religious leader.

Qattada noted that lately, there has been vibrant activism defending the rights of the LGBTQ community, reiterating that Coastal community should remain firm to protect both the male and girl child from such cursed practices.

“We are issuing three urgent demands to MUHURI; that they should immediately remove Dr Willy Mutunga as the organisation’s Chairperon, they issue a statement to clear their name and give out a stand on these accusations and finally, they immediately strike out the word ‘Muslims’ in their title failure to which, we will battle it out in court,” stated Sheikh Qattada.

He said since the organisations’ name indicates the involvement of Muslims in fighting for human rights, it should stop advancing for LGBTQ matters.

Judiciary

Sheikh Qattada also criticised the Supreme Court for allowing the LGBTQ community to form a coalition to defend ‘their rights’.

He asked the court to deal with tangible, development issues and enable Kenyans to access justice and stop imposing to Kenyans Western culture that has normalised same sex intimacy and marriage.

Sentiments echoed by another Muslim preacher Sheikh Abou Hamza who asked parents to be very vigilant at home and guide their children towards the right path.

“Our young generation is endangered since some organisations have normalised gay and lesbianism acts with an aim of attracting our children into it, we will relentlessly fight back,” he disclosed.
