A multi-agency team in investigating how contaminated sugar made its way out of Mombasa port and is suspected to be in the Kenyan market.

The consignment owned by business woman Rehema Badi was offloaded at the Mombasa port last year and water got into the containers while the vessel was on transit from Mauritius to Kenya.

During the offloading of the 46 containers with over 1,112 tonnes of sugar, water was seen flowing freely from the consignment indicated that the sugar was unfit for human consumption.

However, the sugar is said to have been cleared with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) are said to have been involved in clearing the cargo at the Mombasa port.

The consignment was later taken to Mitchell Cotts Company where reports indicate that repackaging and selling of ‘bad’ sugar begun.

Though the Mauritius based company compensated Ms Badi, to pave way for the destruction of the bad sugar, the owner is said to have colluded with KRA officials and the consignment was repackaged and sold to the market.

However, the business woman has come out defending the move saying not all the bags of sugar were contaminated.

“Among the 46 containers, only 13 had contaminated sugar the other consignment is intact and fit for human consumption,” she said.

The business woman further noted that the required process of clearing the cargo at the port of Mombasa was fully adhered to.

“I paid a whopping 30 million shillings for the entire clearance process and further 6 million shillings for inspection of the consignment, there was no circumventing of the law,” she said.

The multi-agency team comprising of KRA, KEBS, KPA and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is in pursuit of the matter.
