Wundanyi Member of Parliament Danson Mwashako has appealed to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to quickly fix the problem at Josa blackspot along the Wundanyi-Mwatate highway, to tame road carnages.

Speaking at the Moi referral hospital in Voi, Taita Taveta County, where he visited the survivors of the Josa grisly road accident, who are receiving urgent medical attention, Mr Mwashako said in his earlier query at the National Assembly during the Kipchumba Murkomen term as Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary, he demanded for urgent actions at the Josa blackspot to save lives.

“I personally raised the safety issue specifically at Josa along the Wundanyi-Mwatate highway and CS Murkomen responded that KeNHA had already conducted its inspection and gave variousĀ  recommendations on what should be done,” said the Legislature.

Among the recommendations issued by KeNHA engineers were; expanding the road to ensure adequate space for drivers to sail through the area, erecting barriers along the roadside to avert accidents and further erecting warning signboards when approaching the area to caution motorists to be more vigilant when approaching Josa blackspot, among other critical safety measures.

“Despite this dangerous spot along the Wundanyi -Mwatate highway having claimed many lives due to unending road accidents, the government has remained mum without taking any urgent safety measures,” added the Wundanyi MP.

Mwashako, noted that the current Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary, Davis Chirchir should move with zeal and speed to implement all the KeNHA recommendations on safety measures at Josa.

“We are appealing to the government through Mr Chirchir to be human enough and act on Josa blackspot. For how long should we be mourning and counting deaths instead of lives? We need very urgent actions on this area so that we save lives and improve on passengers and motorist’s safety,” the vividly pained Mwashako stressed out.

Meanwhile, the MP has appealed to motorists to be extra careful and stop over speeding while plying the Wundanyi -Mwatate highway.

Mwashako’s statement occurs few hours after six people died, four of them being Dr Aggrey High School students who were heading home after fire tragedy on Friday and Saturday that razed the school dormitory.

The School administration had indefinitely closed the school to plan on how to accommodate the students as the administration fully reconstructs the destroyed dormitory.

The school fraternity was thrown into mourning after four of the students travelling home lost their lives at the Josa blackspot where the mini-bus ferrying them developed mechanical problems and overturned killing three students and the driver on the spot while two more passengers died while being rushed to the Moi referral hospital in Voi.
