A youth tailored environmental program dubbed ‘Mombasa Yangu’ will be expanded and restructured so that it directly benefits many jobless youth within Mombasa County.
Mombasa County Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir, said when he sailed into leadership, he invested in that particular program where youth have since been engaged in the environmental cleanliness program and earned allowances.
Speaking during the commemoration of the International Youth Day at the Technology, Art and Heritage centre Swahilipot Hub in Mombasa, Nassir noted that many youth have been requesting to be included in the program, however, many could not be involved due to minimal resources.
He however, said he will work with various stakeholders and focus more on involving various investors so that the program can be expanded to include bigger number of Mombasa jobless youth.
“You all understand that unemployment is not a Mombasa County issue, neither is it only a Kenyan problem but global aspect. However, we are working towards ensuring that our youth get something to sustain themselves,” he said.
Phases
According to Nassir, the program has been conducted in phases due to financial constraints but it has not been dropped in totality.
“Despite all the challenges, we have been soldiering on so that our youth do not feel discriminated and ignored. That is why we are in leadership and we need to work closely with our young generation so that we help them out with the very little resources we have,” he added.
He said some people doubted the sustainability of the program due to the resource factor but the strive has so far yielded fruits and a number of youth recruited to the program.
“All in all, I am reiterating that discipline and ethics is a must for you to benefit from this particular program. I cannot recruit undisciplined staff into my County government. Please change and be focused so that you are among the beneficiaries of ‘Mombasa Yangu’ environmental program,” added the Mombasa County Chief.
The ongoing ‘Mombasa Yangu’ project has recruited over 3,000 Mombasa youth who are indulging in environmental cleanliness activities and receiving allowances from the Mombasa County Government.
