A family from Old town, Mombasa is in distress after their kin was allegedly abducted by unknown people in the Nyali area without a trace.
Amin Mohamed, 28, was abducted by people the family suspects are security officers on January 3, 2024 and since then he has never been found.
The distressed family is pleading with the government to help them trace their kin.
The family led by their father Mohamed Alawi claims his third born son, a Tuktuk operator within Mombasa city was bundled into a silver probox and the suspected detectives vanished with him at a very high speed.
It’s reported that Amin was having some good time with friends in a restaurant when the men arrived, ordered them to lie down, and after being asked to say their phone numbers, Amin was picked alone.
Refugees
Speaking at Haki Africa offices in Mombasa on Friday, the family who came to Kenya as refugees now wants the authorities to help produce their kin alive.
“My son has no criminal record, he is just a tuktuk operator in Mombasa where he earns a living, we are pleading with authorities to help trace our son and bring him back, if he has done anything wrong, let him be charged,”said Alawi.
Amin’s brother Ahmed Mohamed says his brother; a refugee from Somalia, was a tuktuk driver in Mombasa and has never had any criminal record.
“My brother is a refugee from Somalia, he was born in Mogadishu and our parents found their way to Kenya as refugees, he has no formal education because he only went to madrassa,”said Mohamed.
Rights
Haki Africa Rapid response Officer Mathias Shipeta regretted that cases of forceful abduction have resurfaced in Mombasa asking the government to ensure security of all Kenyans.
Shipeta said last year, the organization received a total of 8 cases of forceful disappearances, and the trend is now worrying. He condemned the act and called on the Inspector General of police to help the family get their kin.
“We are not casting blame to anyone, we are only asking the government and security apparatus to ensure that the forceful disappearance does not continue,” said Shipeta during a media briefing held at Haki Africa offices.
Shipeta said should Amin fail to return in a one week period, they will mobilise for peaceful demonstration to demand his release. He questioned why police are mum yet the matter has been brought to their attention.
“if we dont get him within the next one week, we will hold a demonstration to demand for his release. If he was abducted by criminals we ask the government to help us find him, because they have all the machinery,”said Mr. Shipeta.
