Mombasa Sports Club Ladies Hockey Team is seeking sponsorship to enable them travel for the Africa Cup of Club Champions slated from 30th January to 7th February, 2025 in Egypt.

Speaking in Mombasa on Tuesday, Mombasa Sports Club Chairperson, Michael Sangoro said the team needed to raise Ksh.6.3 million to facilitate the travel.

“The team is required to be in Egypt latest January 28th, barely two weeks from now. This tournament is the 26th edition in Africa for the Women Hockey Tournament. The venue will be at Ismailia, about two hours from Cairo,” said MSC Chairperson Michael Sangoro.

They are now calling on corporates, government entities, and individuals in the coast region to chip in and enable the team, consisting of 20 players and four officials, travel to represent the country.

“We traveled to Uganda last year in March and emerged second. We are sure our going to Egypt will not be a disappointment to Mombasa or the country. We are asking for well-wishers to come out and support us,” said MSC Ladies Hockey Team Captain Esther Mwikali.

According to Rajab Babu, a Coach and Sports Convener at Mombasa Sports Club, the tournament will also sell Mombasa and Kenya.

“Going to Cairo is a game changer for our ladies. This is a market where we can shout about our talent and I am seeing a few ladies joining professional leagues and this is key for us. They are going to the big market of Africa,” said Coach Rajab.

Mombasa Sports Club Ladies Hockey Team is among three teams that will be representing the country in Egypt after tying in the first position in 2024 Hockey Premier League.

The other two are Blazers and Strathmore University.

“It is the first time that the Coast Region has produced a team that has qualified for the tournament. This is history being made, it serves as a good example to other similar teams from clubs, schools, and colleges,” said MSC Chair Michael Sangoro.

  1. Meanwhile, a round trip flight ticket to Egypt costs between ksh.89,290 to ksh.1.25 million.
