Students at Mama Ngina Girls High School in Mombasa have finally relocated from the upmarket Kizingo area in Mvita constituency to Shanzu in North Coast, Kisauni constituency, Mombasa County.

Mama Ngina Girls, Currently, the only girls’ boarding national school in Mombasa was squeezed within a less-than-an-acre piece of land in Kizingo, Mombasa Island.

The school has been a household name for years for its outstanding record of posting a string of high-flying grades, until it slowly started reporting poor performance in the recent past.

The girls’ school will be neighboring the Shimo la Tewa prison, Shimo la Tewa Boys Secondary School and the Shanzu Teachers Training College.

200 Million

The new Sh200 million school is on a 20-acre piece of land, enough for amenities like sports grounds, laboratories, more classrooms and bigger hostels.

Addressing the media during the opening of the school, Mama Ngina Girls Chief principal Mwanahamisi Omar said the school has 20 tuition blocks, 30 offices, a dormitory that can accommodate 1000 girls and a 2000 capacity dining hall.

The Chief Principal further said, with the newschool, intake will be more and would easily double the population, which will boost the Education ministry’s 100 per cent transition policy from primary school, especially for the girl child.

Mrs Omar, confirmed the school has propelled back to glory after producing best results in the 2023 KCSE exam compared to other years.

Eric Musau, Assistant Dean Curriculum says the new ultra-modern spacious facility will provide a conducive learning environment  to the students, sentiments echoed by school PTA Chairperson Hussein Juma.

Students led by Esther Muturi and Emily Kerubo said their old school was congested and with the new spacious facility, the students will be able to excel in their academics.

The new facility construction works started in 2019, after Mama Ngina Girls was allocated 20 acres by Shimo La Tewa National School and the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services.

The school once fully complete is designed to have an ultra-modern sporting facility, including an Olympic-size swimming pool, standard soccer pitches, basketball, volleyball and netball courts and a running track.
